Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc have delivered their verdicts on the controversial all-electric Ferrari Luce, which continues to divide opinion.
The Luce, which translates from the Italian word for light, will cost in the region of £474,320, is a radical departure from the norm of Ferrari, acting as its first all-electric car.
Former Ferrari chairman Luca Di Montezemolo savaged the new design, going as far as to say: “We risk destroying a legend, and I’m truly sorry about that. I hope they at least remove the prancing horse from that car”.
However, current Ferrari Formula 1 drivers Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc delivered a more positive outlook on the new car, sdisagreeing with Di Montezemolo,
“In terms of the attention to detail, you can tell that it’s very Ferrari,” Hamilton said upon first seeing the Luce.
The Monegasque also praised the ergonomics, “I love that it’s back to having more physical buttons, so you can actually drive, look at the road and you can feel,” he said.
Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc test the Ferrari Luce
Taking the car for a drive, Leclerc was forced to take the passenger seat as Hamilton began to test the Luce’s speed.
“Whoah! No, no, no, no, no, please don’t do that,” said Leclerc.
“The power delivery is amazing,” said Hamilton, “you just feel centred the whole time, even when you’re going through corners.
“That’s probably why I was so relaxed!”
Leclerc highlighted that “it is so silent inside the car,” but going into “performance mode” adds a sound more akin to the trademark Ferrari engine sound.
“I liked that electric sound,” said Hamilton.
The Luce has divided opinion; its design is as far removed from the current Ferrari lineup as possible. How many Ferraris will sell when it goes on sale will intrigue many in the motorsport world.
