Former Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo has offered an unflattering assessment of the company’s first-ever electric road vehicle.

Italian for ‘light’, the Luce was designed in collaboration with Sir Jony Ive – former Apple designer – and Marc Newson, both of the LoveFrom design agency.

Reputed to reach 60 kph in two-and-a-half seconds, the car has been released to great attention, with Pope Leo even being handed a demonstration of the car by Chief Executive Benedetto Vigna.

But it has not gone down well with the public, it appears, as the Milan stock market saw Ferrari shares drop by eight percent, and by five percent in New York.

And it has led di Montezemolo, who oversaw the company – including its Formula 1 operations – for a number of years, to publicly damn the car.

The Ferrari Luce, released on Tuesday, preceded a stock market drop for the company

“If I were to say what I really think, I’d be doing Ferrari a disservice,” he said.

“We risk destroying a legend, and I’m truly sorry about that. I hope they at least remove the prancing horse from that car.

“[Luce] is certainly a car that at least the Chinese won’t copy.”

Initially said to cost £474,320, the Luce will be on sale later this year, but Ferrari can now be confident that its former president will not be making a purchase.
