Sargeant ‘has all the pieces’ to make next step

Logan Sargeant (USA) Williams Racing FW45. Formula 1 World Championship, Rd 13, Belgian Grand Prix, Sunday 29th July 2023. Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium.

Williams driver Logan Sargeant believes he now “has all the pieces” he needs in order to make a step up in performance when Formula 1 resumes from its summer break.

Williams holds seventh place in this year’s Constructors’ Championship though Alex Albon has scored all of the team’s 11 points.

Sargeant has largely trailed Albon and captured a best finish of 11th at the British Grand Prix.

Reflecting on the first half of his rookie season Sargeant conceded he is “not where I want to be” though emphasised “over the last few rounds I’m much closer to where I want to be and I’ve seen really good progression as of late.”

Sargeant added that he has made progress “just in the way the car needs to be driven,” and expanded on the situation.

“It’s actually very small things but the small things that make a big difference,” he said.

“There were points in the year where I was simply holding the brake too late into the corners and slowing the minimum speed too much, I’ve gotten on top of that, just inputs in high-speed corners causing instabilities, things like that, there’s countless things I can continue on.

“It’s all just very minor driving traits that needed to be adjusted, a load of things just to suit the car better that didn’t really affect the balance of a car in Formula 2 but with how sensitive these cars are these small differences make quite a significant difference.”

Sargeant expressed confidence that he can put in more rounded performances across the second half of the season.

“I have high expectations, I want to drive well, I’ve been frustrated with myself plenty of times this year where I haven’t done what I could have done,” he said. At times I feel like I’ve just missed the mark on that.

“It’s about cleaning that up, stringing it together better, executing better, and I feel like that’s the next step because I now feel like I have the pieces to do it all.”
