Valtteri Bottas believes he has nothing left to prove in F1

Valtteri Bottas has issued a defiant statement of intent following the Formula 1 Mexico City Grand Prix, as rumours of the Finn departing Cadillac at the end of 2026 intensify.

Bottas has found himself the subject of speculation in recent weeks as rumours began to swirl that he faced losing his Cadillac seat at the end of the season.

Cadillac Test and Reserve Driver Colton Herta has emerged as the unlikely top candidate for his seat, the situation playing out after teammate Sergio Perez received a contract extension.

Hopes of answering the speculation on-track ended in dramatic fashion in Mexico City, when suspension failure sent him careering into the barriers at high speed.

After the race, Bottas remained coy about discussion, as or if he would be in the cockpit in 2027.

“I don’t really have much to say,” Bottas said to media, including Motorsport Week when asked about his future.

“That’s the situation; there are rumours. I have nothing really to say; we’ll find out eventually.”

“For me, it was always kind of clear who’s here for next year.

“Obviously, Checo made an extension, and I hadn’t made a further extension yet. I’m sure, in a big company, there’s always the board meetings that they could approve the final decisions, and I believe those are soon.

“So, I think everything just needs to be validated with the big bosses in the USA.”

Valtteri Bottas believes he has nothing to prove in F1

With ten victories, 20 pole positions and 67 podiums across his career, Bottas denied he had a point to prove to anyone as F1 enters its final races of the season.

“This year, not really,” he said.

“All what I signed up for is development, working for the future, trying to sometimes nurse the car home just to make it to the line. Just really waiting to that moment that we get a better car and then we actually do something with it instead of just, like, nursing it.

“There’s been so many issues behind the scenes, and I think I’ve had the worst of it. And also the DNF rate means that I’ve had much less opportunities to complete the races. So yeah, there’s a lot behind the scenes that explains many things.”

If Bottas leaves the sport for a second time at the end of the season, another return will be difficult to pull off.

He is marketable, but faces challenges from younger drivers eying up a seat. Time will tell whether experience or potential wins out in the battle for the second Cadillac seat.
