Citroen Racing has announced it will join the Formula E World Championship, effective from Season 12, replacing Maserati MSG Racing.

The French marque has confirmed its entry into the all-electric championship, after longstanding speculation about its foray into single-seater racing.

Citroen has released little information so far, aside from a teaser video on social media, but it is expected that it will replace fellow Stellantis brand Maserati on the grid.

“Citroën is returning to motorsport, an arena that shaped its history and legend – motorsport in its most visionary form: an 100% electric, responsible and committed competition with popular races in the heart of cities, a young, committed, connected audience and a technological, international showcase for the future of mobility,” a statement read.

It also boasts eight WRC Manufacturers’ titles, as well as three Drivers’ Championships in the FIA World Touring Car series.

Nick Cassidy, who left Jaguar TCS Racing and recently joined Stellantis brand Peugeot in the World Endurance Championship, is expected to be unveiled as one of the team’s drivers.

Jean-Eric Vergne is slated to be the Kiwi’s partner, shifting from another Stellantis brand in DS.

The first look at a Citroen Formula E car will most likely be at the championship’s official pre-season testing programme, which commences at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo in Valencia between October 27-31.
