Pascal Wehrlein’s Miami E-Prix victory was not just the German’s first Formula E victory of Season 11 – he also became the first FE driver to win an FIA President’s Medal.

The Tag Heuer Porsche man overcame the chaos of a red flag situation which saw many other drivers penalised for failing to finish Attack Modes, boosting his World Championship defence.

In doing so, Wehrlein was able to receive the medal, which the FIA says is produced with “fully sustainable materials”, via a process that transforms waste materials into the impressive-looking medals.

The medal was, alluded to by its name, the brainchild of the sport’s governing body’s president, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, who said upon its release: “When racing, our drivers give everything they have to secure a spot at the top of the podium, and as the governing body for motorsport, we have a responsibility to recognise and celebrate these champions.

Lorenzo Invernizzi, owner of Libe Incisioni, the metal company who make the medals, said: “It is a real honour to be able to bring our full-circle production methods to the pinnacle of motorsport.

“During our creative discussions with the FIA, President Ben Sulayem was clear in his wish to ensure a sustainable manufacturing process that not only creates minimal environmental impact but also delivers a product that is fitting for such a special moment, something that recognises the commitment and success of the recipients.

“Seeing this vision on more podiums is a testament to the FIA’s unwavering commitment to sustainability and the celebration of achievement.”

The medals have been handed out to Formula 1 drivers since Abu Dhabi 2022, but will now also given to race-winners in the World Endurance Championship, the World Rally Championship and the FIA’s World Karting Championship.

Two medals will be up for grabs next time out, as Formula E returns in Monaco for the country’s first-ever double-header.
