Alpine expresses ‘frustration’ with FIA’s Monaco GP podium appeal outcome

The FIA has allowed the appeal filed by McLaren and Red Bull against Pierre Gasly’s podium reinstatement at the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix.

The FIA International Court of Appeal (ICA) has reversed the decision of the stewards, who had reinstated Gasly onto the podium after having penalised the Alpine driver for breaching the pit lane speed limit twice during the race at the Principality.

The Enstone-based team, however, believes that it has been “unjustly punished” by the highest appellate tribunal within the governing body’s regulatory apparatus.

Gasly, along with four other drivers, including Oscar Piastri, had been slapped with time penalties during the Monaco GP.

While the others dove into the pits to serve their respective penalties, Alpine chose to keep Gasly out on track.

The Frenchman took the chequered flag in third but the stewards applied two five-second penalties to his race time for two separate speeding incidents. This meant Isack Hadjar was elevated into the final podium place.

But as the Anglo-French marque had not served the penalties on the road, it could exercise its ‘Right to Review’ – a luxury not available to its rivals. Alpine were successful, as the FIA and FOM realised the penalties had erroneously been triggered by an errant timing loop system.

McLaren and Red Bull decided to appeal the stewards’ decision before the ICA and were able to secure a judgment in their favour, with the tribunal directing the penalties to be re-applied to Gasly.

“The team expresses its disappointment and frustration with the outcome reached by the FIA International Court of Appeal relating to the result of the 2026 Monaco Grand Prix,” Alpine said in its official statement on the verdict.

“While we disagree with the decision, and still fully maintain that Car #10 did not exceed the Pit Lane speed limit at any point during the race, the team acknowledges the decision of the judging panel from the recent hearing in Paris.

“While the result is not what we had hoped for, as we feel that we have been unjustly punished, the team is firmly focused on continuing to improve its performance on track and remains in a close and very competitive Championship fight.

“This outcome will not deter the team’s efforts and motivation in achieving its objectives by the end of the season.”

Did Pierre Gasly breach the pit-lane speed limit at the F1 Monaco GP?

The ICA delivered a very nuanced verdict on both the regulatory and sporting aspects.

The main argument advanced by McLaren and Red Bull was with respect to “sporting fairness”. The ICA conceded to the same.

The tribunal ruled that the Official Timing System (OTS) was in place since the 1996 season. The metrics by which it was to measure the 60 km/h pit lane speed limit were also defined to all the teams and drivers before the race weekend.

In such a circumstance, the competitors, including Alpine and Gasly, had the Friday sessions available to them to calibrate their pit limiters.

The tribunal, therefore, negated Alpine’s argument that it had discovered, after the fact, that the timing loop had misread Gasly and the other driver’s ‘shorter’ trajectory towards the pit lane.

“The Parties also agree on the fact that the FIA delegated the official timekeeping function to FOM and that FOM is responsible for the setup and implementation of the so called “Official Timing System”, which has been in place since 1996,” the ICA held.

“It is also undisputed that the distance parameter itself is not disclosed to competitors. Competitors therefore cannot independently choose which distance parameter to apply.

“They [the teams] receive the OTS outputs, use Free Practice Sessions to calibrate their limiters and driving approach against the system as configured, and conduct the Competition on that basis.

“An OTS reading even 0.1 km/h above the applicable limit may result in an infringement. Such a regime is workable only if the benchmark against which all competitors calibrate is common, stable and applied equally throughout the Competition.”

Moreover, Alpine were not able to disclose the extent of the distance travelled by Gasly towards the pit lane. The stewards’ decision to overturn the penalties was merely based on the “best estimate” supplied by the team.

As a result, the ICA decided not only that retrospectively amending the race classification was against the spirit of sporting fairness but also that Gasly had, in fact, breached the pit lane speed limit on both occasions.

“What sporting fairness absolutely precludes is the retrospective replacement, after competitors have calibrated and competed against it, of the common event-wide calibration parameter itself by a different geometric or measurement approach for the purpose of re-adjudicating an individual competitor’s result,” the ruling further decided.

The ICA’s decision has finally put an end to the Monaco GP podium saga, as Alpine has no other recourse available to challenge the verdict.
