Sergio Perez announced his departure from Racing Point on Wednesday, which will see the Mexican leave the team at the end of the season, likely to make room for Sebastian Vettel, which could be confirmed as early as this weekend.
Perez has raced for Racing Point (previously Force India) since 2014, scoring five podiums in that time and he even played a key role in rescuing the team from certain bankruptcy.
But his time will come to an end in just a few months and it’s uncertain as to whether he will remain on the grid, after admitting he has “no plan B”, but hopes to deliver some good news soon.
Otmar Szafnauer has worked with the 30-year-old during his tenure with the team and reacted to the news, describing Perez as “one of the most complete drivers on the grid”.
“Checo has been part of the Silverstone family for seven years and in that time has become one of the most complete drivers on the grid,” he said. “Blisteringly quick on Saturday and Sunday, he’s established his reputation as a tenacious racer and together we have enjoyed some fantastic moments.
“If there was ever a sniff of a podium, Checo was ready to pounce, and those five podiums represent some of the finest days in the history of this team.
“Outside of the car, Checo is a true character and a good friend, and it’s been a pleasure working with him for such a long time.
“Although we will say goodbye at the end of the year, there are still nine races to go and plenty of opportunities for Checo to make some more special memories with this team.”
