Kevin Magnussen conceded his fitness was lacking during the final stages of qualifying for Formula 1’s Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.
Magnussen was drafted into action just a couple of weeks before Formula 1’s season-opener in Bahrain after Haas dropped Nikita Mazepin.
Magnussen qualified seventh in Bahrain, before racing to fifth, as he picked up Haas’ best result since 2018.
Upon his first visit to the high-speed Jeddah Corniche Circuit Magnussen again made Q3 but went slowest in the session after struggling physically.
“We have to be happy with Q3, but I think the car was better than P10, I didn’t get the most out of it,” said Magnussen.
“Honestly my neck just completely broke in Q3 – suddenly it just snapped, and I couldn’t hold it any more, I wasn’t driving well.
“I think maybe there was a P5 in the car, there’s only half a second up to P5 and my best lap in Q3 was on used tyres – and not a great lap as I said. The team had a P5 in it, but I didn’t.”
Magnussen also expressed relief upon hearing that team-mate Mick Schumacher escaped injury following his high-speed accident in Q2.
“Mick is uninjured which is good and incredible when you see the crash that he had,” he said.
“The safety is so good with these cars with the fact that you can walk away from a crash like that, it’s impressive.
“I think he was having a great qualifying session up until that point and he was up for a good result, so he’ll just need to come back and get on the horse and bounce back.”
Magnussen will be Haas’ sole entrant in the race after the team opted to withdraw Schumacher.
I understand F1’s point of view in regards to running in Saudi Arabia. However rather than modernising the country I believe F1 are enablers allowing Saudi Arabia to add a layer of gloss to their horredous human rights record. The mass executions recently should have raised many red flags for F1. I don’t believe the executions will stop after the F1 teams have moved on and F1 is only kidding themselves to think they can change the internal conduct within this nation who has almost single handily created the new term of ‘sports washing’.
That’s a very “nazi”-like mindset you have there. What even gives you the right to think your way existing should apply to every other place in the world? You DO realize people in SA look as us Westerners and think we are the real animals due essentially living in a lawless dystopian nightmare, right? And they have a point. No discipline, morals, or useful laws; and rampant drug use, crime and sex; men have become women and women have become men etc. If you think the Western world has any right to preach to anyone else, then you ought to get your head checked.
