Sauber-backed youngster Theo Pourchaire will continue to race for ART Grand Prix in FIA Formula 2 this season.

Pourchaire finished runner-up to Alpine’s Oscar Piastri in 2020’s Formula 3 season before stepping up to Formula 2 with ART Grand Prix in 2021.

Pourchaire became the championship’s youngest race winner, aged 17, when he triumphed in the Feature Race in Monaco.

He won once more, in Italy, en route to fifth place in the final standings.

Pourchaire tested for ART post-season and was widely expected to stay on, and on Monday the news was officially confirmed.

With Piastri, Robert Shwartzman, Guanyu Zhou and Dan Ticktum all moving on, it means Pourchaire is the highest-placed driver from 2021 to return to the series for 2022.

“I am proud to be continuing in F2 with ART Grand in 2022,” he said. “It’s an honour for me to work with such a great team. This will be our third year together and it has become like family to me.

“To continue with them in the pre-cursor to F1 is very exciting. I would like to thank the Sauber Academy for accompanying me once again.

“It will be a busy year and I want to have fun and gain experience for my future. We are more determined than ever and we will be aiming for the F2 title.”

Pourchaire is also expected to take on an increased role within Alfa Romeo’s Formula 1 team for 2022.
