Could Herta make his IndyCar return in 2027?

Former IndyCar star Colton Herta has revealed a goal to return for one of the series’ most coveted events, following 2027 uncertainty.

Last season, Herta confirmed he would leave the American racing series to move into the coveted Formula 2 category. The highly anticipated move followed several failed attempts to secure the crucial Super Licence points needed for his Formula 1 debut.

However, as the season has progressed, Herta’s debut F2 campaign has been, at best, lacklustre. With only two rounds left in the competition, the 26-year-old has yet to reach the podium and is still far from the championship standings he needs to earn his super license points.

In reflecting on the season, the Hitech driver confirmed he was “not interested in doing another season in the series,” leaving many questioning his future in motorsport for 2027. But recently, Herta revealed he is interested in returning to America to partake in the Indy 500, one of motorsport’s most famous races.

“Yeah, I’ll never turn down the Indy 500,” Herta explained.

Despite being set to return to the Indy 500 in 2026, Herta was forced to withdraw after two F2 rounds were rescheduled to Miami and Montreal. But given the chance, the Cadillac-backed driver said he wouldn’t turn down the opportunity in 2027.

“I always want to do the Indy 500. It was a shame this year that I couldn’t do it. It was all set up.”

“But it was going to happen and unfortunately it didn’t,” he continued. “I don’t know what next year looks like for me. But if I get the chance, 100 per cent, I would love to do the Indy 500.”

Bruno Michel shares his thoughts on Herta’s debut F2 campagin

Many who have followed Herta’s journey to F1 have been left stunned by his progress this season. Among them is Bruno Michel, F2’s CEO, who shared his thoughts on the American’s debut season in the category.

“It has been more difficult than I thought it was going to be because Colton is a very strong driver. There’s no doubt about that,” Michel told media, including Motorsport Week.

Michel highlighted that the difference in working environments was potentially severely underestimated by both parties.

“He and we maybe underestimated the difference of working environment that we have, compared to IndyCar teams.

“But I don’t think it has to be settled as an example, and I really hope that he’s going to finish the season on a high. We’re still hoping for that.”

But Michel highlighted that Herta’s season hasn’t been a complete “failure”, as some may suggest. Claiming that spending time on the last series on the road to F1 will prove crucial in the long run.

“He had some good races as well. He had more difficulties in quali, and maybe that’s one of the limits we were having, because you need to, in 30 minutes, come up with the right time immediately.

“You have one lap, maybe two flying laps on a set of tyres, in which you have very limited track time.

“That’s also the way we prepare drivers for Formula 1 because in Formula 1, you have limited track time as well. So probably he struggled for that and he suffered from that a bit more than what he expected.

“Now, I really hope sincerely that he’s going to finish the season on a high. He deserves it.”
