IndyCar releases new 15-race schedule after Detroit cancellation

The NTT IndyCar Series has released an updated 15-race schedule after the cancellation of the ‘Dual in Detroit’.

Due to the worldwide Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic many sports have been forced put their events on hold and be rescheduled for a later date.

The new schedule will see the addition of three double-header events at Iowa, Laguna Seca and the Indianapolis road course circuit.

Texas Motor Speedway will currently host the season-opener, the Genesys 600, on June 6.

The season will then take a week off before a mammoth six races back-to-back from June 21 at Road America, followed by the return of Richmond Raceway.

The first race at the Indianapolis road course will take place on the July 4 weekend alongside NASCAR’s Brickyard 400, and this will be followed up by the annual trip across the Canadian border to Toronto, before heading to Iowa for a double-header.

After a three-week break, Mid-Ohio will get the season back underway on August 9, afterwards will see the two-week schedule for the 104th running of the Indianapolis 500 which is currently set to run on August 23, with the final oval event at Gateway the following weekend.

Portland will maintain its rescheduled date on September 13 and then IndyCar will then proceed to Laguna Seca for another double-header.

The final confirmed date on the schedule is a second race on Indianapolis road course on October 3 which is currently set to be the season finale, with the Grand Prix of St.Petersburg still yet to be confirmed.

“We’re committed to bringing fans as much on-track action as possible,” said Penske Entertainment Corp. President and CEO Mark Miles.

“Our updated schedule features additional racing at fan-favourite venues and adds to the total number of events on our calendar.

“The COVID-19 situation continues to be dynamic and challenging for everyone, so we have developed contingency plans which will allow us to respond to changing conditions.

“Our goal is to preserve as much racing competition as possible while prioritizing the health and safety of our participants and spectators.

“Like our fans, we’re disappointed we won’t be racing in Detroit this year. However, we’re excited to return to Belle Isle in 2021 and know we’ll put on a great show for everyone when we do.

“We also appreciate the flexibility and support of our event promoters at Iowa Speedway and Laguna Seca, who have enthusiastically embraced the opportunity to host doubleheaders.”
