George Russell capped off a commanding weekend at the Baku Street Circuit, converting a dominant pole position into a hard-fought victory for Mercedes at the Azerbaijan GP.
Despite enduring late Safety Car restarts and constant pressure from a charging Max Verstappen, the Briton held his nerve to lead almost every lap, taking the chequered flag by just a tenth of a second.
Further back, teammate Kimi Antonelli staged a gritty recovery drive from 16th to fifth following a Q1 crash, limiting the championship damage as Russell closed the points gap at the top of the standings.
Qualifying at the Azerbaijan GP
George Russell stormed to a dominant pole position for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, beating Charles Leclerc by over eight-tenths of a second.
The Mercedes driver secured his fifth pole of the season and kept Mercedes’ perfect qualifying engine record intact.
Oscar Piastri took third for McLaren, while Isack Hadjar impressed on his return to claim fourth.
In contrast, Kimi Antonelli suffered an early exit in Q1 after crashing at Turn 7 and breaking his front-left suspension.
He started 16th, opening a major opportunity for Russell to gain championship ground.
Max Verstappen also struggled with car stability, managing only eighth place despite leading FP3.
He would opt to change his Red Bull engine, and with all parts within its pool, he was free to keep his grid slot.
Carlos Sainz, who took ninth in a season-best for Williams, was forced to start 14th after a grid penalty for a yellow flag infringement.
Race start at the Azerbaijan GP
George Russell launched cleanly from pole position to retain the lead into Turn 1, while Oscar Piastri picked off Charles Leclerc for second.
Behind them, Verstappen surged past Pierre Gasly early before snatching sixth from Lewis Hamilton.
Further back, Kimi Antonelli endured a nightmare opening, dropping to P17.
Russell wasted no time building a gap, opening a lead of over two seconds by Lap 4.
Behind him, the Red Bulls showcased supreme straight-line speed, as Isack Hadjar and Verstappen both cleared Lando Norris in rapid succession.
Hadjar then sliced past Leclerc for third before pulling aside on Lap 7 to let his teammate through on a split strategy.
Verstappen set his sights on Piastri for second, but the McLaren driver mounted a stout defence through the technical castle section.
Running in dirty air, Verstappen began overheating his medium tyres and fell into the clutches of Hadjar on softs.
Red Bull debated swapping their drivers as Hadjar pushed to attack Piastri, but the pit wall held position.
Antonelli launched a recovery drive through the midfield, picking off drivers one by one to enter the top ten by Lap 18.
Lance Stroll triggered a brief yellow flag when a water pressure issue forced him to park up, while Fernando Alonso retired in the pits.
At the front, Russell’s serene afternoon hit a brief scare on Lap 26 when he brushed the right-hand wall.
Mercedes confirmed no major data anomalies, leaving the Briton clear in front with nearly a ten-second advantage as the pit window approached.
Safety Car after Safety Car
Lap 27 saw tensions peak at Red Bull as Hadjar challenged Verstappen into Turn 1, prompting a strict “keep it clean” warning from the pit wall.
Up front, Russell built an 11-second lead over Piastri, while Antonelli chipped away at the gap to Pierre Gasly in eighth.
The race turned on Lap 31 when Alex Albon crashed into the barriers, triggering a Safety Car.
The entire field dove into the pits for fresh rubber, neutralising Russell’s advantage and bunching up the pack to hand Antonelli a massive lifeline.
All hell broke loose on the Lap 36 restart.
Franco Colapinto locked up heavily into Turn 1, triggering a multi-car pileup that eliminated Norris and Gasly, while damaging his own car.
Antonelli navigated the chaos cleanly to vault to seventh before a second Safety Car emerged.
When racing resumed on Lap 39, Verstappen pounced on Piastri as the McLaren driver locked up and skidded into the run-off area, dropping him out of the points.
Hadjar inherited third, while Antonelli climbed to sixth.
By Lap 42, Russell led Verstappen by a narrow margin at the front. Antonelli locked onto the rear wing of Hamilton, hunting fifth position in a thrilling battle to limit his championship damage.
The final laps at the Azerbaijan GP
Antonelli powered past Hamilton down the main straight on Lap 43 to snatch fifth position.
Front-runner Verstappen immediately responded, setting the fastest lap to dial up the pressure on Russell, with just four tenths separating the lead battle.
Arvid Lindblad pulled off a sharp move into Turn 3 on Bearman for eighth, later passing Esteban Ocon on the final lap for seventh.
Despite suffering floor damage from earlier restart contact, Antonelli rapidly reeled in Charles Leclerc over the closing laps after the Ferrari driver made an error.
At the front, Verstappen brushed the wall while hunting Russell and faced a brief stewards’ investigation for a Safety Car infringement, which yielded no further action.
Russell held his nerve under intense pressure as Valtteri Bottas hit the barriers on the final lap, bringing out yellow flags.
The Mercedes driver crossed the line just a tenth of a second clear of Verstappen to secure a hard-fought victory, with Isack Hadjar rounding out the podium in third ahead of Leclerc and Antonelli.
