Sky Sports commentator Martin Brundle, known to millions as the voice of Formula 1, has confirmed he is no longer commentating full-time moving forward.
Brundle first started commentating in F1 following the sport’s move from the BBC to ITV in 1997, joining Murray Walker to create an iconic partnership.
Since that inaugural year, he has established himself as one of the defining authorities on F1 in its history, and dubbed the unluckiest former driver to never win a race.
Commentating on iconic moments over the past 29 years, quotes such as “Is that Glock?” and ” that you didn’t work Michael, you hit the wrong part of him my friend” have become enshrined in F1 lore.
But Brundle, now 66, has been noticeably absent during races in the last several years, handing his duties to others during certain events.
Addressing the reasons behind the absences, he revealed he is now attending a set number of races a year, adding it leaves him with conflicting emotions.
“I do 16 races a year, so I have to miss some, and they tend to be the early-hours-of-the-morning races,” Brundle revealed on The F1 Show podcast.
“But I always feel a bit sad when I’m not in Suzuka because I love that track as a driver and as a broadcaster, but I can’t do them all these days.”

Flyaway races still special for Martin Brundle
Despite needing to miss races with challenging start times from a European timezone perspective, Brundle confirmed he will be back at the next round in Miami.
He then gave his thoughts on how the weekend will likely pan out, believing the race weekend will act as a relaunch for the much-maligned 2026 F1 regulations.
”I’m definitely in Miami,” he said.
“That is going to be almost like the start of a new Formula One season. It’s going to be one of the biggest relaunches in the history of Formula 1, I think. It’s going to be early May, but looking forward to it.”
Brundle’s admission that he is now down to just 16 races a year plugs a gap for fans curious about his absence. His commentary and grid walks are must watch TV, the grid notably missing him when he skips a race.
