Oscar Piastri has recounted the “painful” issues he endured at the Formula 1 2026 Dutch Grand Prix that resulted in a 32-second gap to his McLaren team-mate
A clinical victory for Lando Norris left half the McLaren garage ecstatic. However, Piastri had little to celebrate following a sixth-place finish at Zandvoort. The Australian qualified well, starting on the second row, alongside Championship leader Kimi Antonelli.
A tumultuous opening lap saw Piastri in fifth, where he would take the red-flag restart. But after overtaking George Russell and Charles Leclerc, it momentarily looked to be McLaren’s day. Unfortunately, his race fell apart as the race progressed.
A series of unfortunate strategy calls left Piastri falling behind his rivals. An early slow stop saw the 25-year-old lose crucial track position to Russell, and then a second stint on the hard tyres continued to derail his Sunday.
Following the disappointing drive, Piastri explained that his strategy was pretty clearly wrong compared to his rival’s.
“The idea was to start on the hards and then go to the end, but it became clear pretty quickly that the hards weren’t actually great – but I don’t think that side of things was much of an issue,” Piastri told media, including Motorsport Week
However, he emphasised that the strategy was not the sole factor in his underwhelming result.
“Obviously, the slow first stop was a bit painful, and the pace afterwards was painful, and there were a lot of different strategies, but I don’t think ours was really the issue of our race.”
Piastri explains ‘tricky’ F1 issues during his second stint
The degradation on Piastri’s opening set of hard tyres was manageable, but his second stint proved far more problematic. After initially feeling comfortable, the Australian quickly lost front-end grip. Unable to match the pace of his rivals around.
“The degradation on the first set of hards felt okay. The second set was good for about five laps, and then I completely ran out of front tyres,” Piastri explained.
“So there is not necessarily one thing that’s going wrong, but the stint on that tyre was very tricky.”
“Starting in fifth [for the restart], I was able to go around the outside, and it was a lot nicer because I picked one space up. And then George’s power unit selected reverse down to Turn 7… Then it went pretty downhill from there.”
Despite briefly making progress and looking capable of challenging towards the front, Piastri admitted there was no single explanation for why his afternoon unravelled.
“There’s not really one clear issue. I think in the first stint, things felt reasonable; there was a bit of a tough period in the middle, but by the end of the stint, it felt pretty good.
Then the second stint on the hards was okay for the first five laps, and then a mess.”
Piastri acknowledged that McLaren’s machinery was not the problem. With his team-mate now securing back-to-back victories with McLaren’s current package.
“Lando has won the race by quite a lot, so I think the car is in a good place. It’s been quick the last two weekends, and I think these two tracks suit the car well; it is just that, for whatever reason, I’ve not been able to get the pace out of it.”
The Australian currently sits seventh in the Drivers’ Standings, 55 points behind Norris. Piastri will look toward circuits like Monza to capitalise on McLaren’s pace and move him closer to his rivals.
