Sergio Perez will return to F1 with Cadillac after being left out in the cold by Red Bull

Sergio Perez has branded the decision by Cadillac to sign him as “an honour” as the Mexican prepares to make his Formula 1 return with the team in 2026.

Perez has been out of the spotlight since being ditched by Red Bull at the end of last year, leaving him without a seat for the current campaign.

The 35-year-old has, like forthcoming team-mate Valtteri Bottas, been linked with drives across their hiatus periods, but has plumped for the sport’s brand new outfit.

It will be a chance for Perez to prove his worth again, after the unceremonious nature of his exit from Red Bull, with his experience invaluable to the nascent American squad.

In a statement upon the confirmation of his signing, Perez indicated that his early discussions with the team’s hierarchy were enough to sway him.

“Joining the Cadillac Formula 1 Team is an incredibly exciting new chapter in my career,” he said.

“From our first conversations, I could sense the passion and determination behind this project.

“It’s an honour to be part of a building a team that can develop together so that, in time, we will fight at the very front.”

Perez spoke of his confidence in the project, citing its ambition, as well as his hope his Mexican homeland and the neighbouring United States will get behind it.

“Cadillac is a legendary name in American motorsport, and to help bring such a fantastic company to Formula 1 is a huge responsibility, one I’m confident of taking on,” he added.

“I’m proud to be part of such an ambitious and meaningful project from the very beginning.

“I’m really pleased to be part of such a dynamic line-up, and together I believe we can help shape this team into a real contender, the team of the Americas.

“We’re counting on support from across the continent – and we want to make everyone proud.”
