Colton Herta ‘tired of F1 carrot’ amid Cadillac link

Colton Herta is “tired” of Formula 1 speculation linking him to a Cadillac drive and just wants to focus on winning the IndyCar Championship in 2025.

Cadillac is entering F1 in 2026 thanks to TWG Global’s revised Andretti bid.

With a bonafide American team joining the grid, many believe Cadillac will be choosing a stateside driver to propel its F1 team forward.

Herta, who races for the TWG-owned Andretti IndyCar outfit is said to be a prime candidate but the Californian has been linked with an F1 seat before.

Speaking to select media including Motorsport Week Herta batted away talk of an F1 debut with Cadillac with the 2025 IndyCar campaign front of his mind.

“I’ve kind of been dragged around in this talk for, it feels like, half a decade now,” the 24-year-old said.

“I’ve had the carrot in front of me for a while. I’m kind of tired of that being the case, and I just want to drive at this point and focus on IndyCar this year and focus on winning a championship, and if something arises out of that, I’d have to think about it.

“It’s still not a for sure thing. All my friends and family are here in the U.S., and I don’t know anybody where I’m going, so it’s a big decision to make if I have to make that decision.”

Herta unaware of super license situation

Herta had his strongest IndyCar season to date in 2024, picking up his first oval win in the season finale and finishing second in the Drivers’ standings to three-time champion Alex Palou.

Cadillac isn’t the first F1 team to be linked with the Californian, who first headed to IndyCar victory lane as a 19-year-old.

AlphaTauri (now Racing Bulls) courted Herta for a seat in its 2023 F1 lineup but he didn’t have the required super license points to be granted entry to the series and the FIA didn’t offer an exemption.

As it stands, Herta has 39 points towards his super license, one short of the necessary 40.

However, Herta is unaware of his license situation.

“I guess the answer to that is I didn’t even know what the math was to get into — to get a super license,” he said.

“If it happens, it happens, great, and then I’ll have a decision to make, if I’m still wanted.

“If it doesn’t happen, then poor me, I’m stuck racing IndyCars. I’ll be all right either way.”
