Goethe steps up to F2, replacing Williams F1 debutant Colapinto

Goethe will step up to F2 with MP Motorsport for the rest of the season

Red Bull Junior Driver Oliver Goethe will step up to the FIA Formula 2 World Championship from FIA F3, replacing Williams Formula 1 newbie Franco Colapinto at MP Motorsport.

Goethe, 19, competing in his second season in FIA F3 in 2024, was seventh in the Drivers’ standings coming into the final round of the season at Monza, with one race victory and two further podiums to his name this year with Campos Racing.

However, MP Motorsport had a vacant seat to fill with Colapinto stepping up from F2 to the Williams F1 squad for the rest of the season in place of Logan Sargeant.

Goethe is the young prospect selected and he now has a great opportunity to showcase his skills on the next step of the junior ladder for the remainder of the campaign.

“I am very excited to race in Formula 2 this weekend and for the remainder of the season,” he said.

“It’s such an amazing opportunity and I am looking forward to working with MP Motorsport again. Although I haven’t got any experience in this F2 car, the two seasons I spent in FIA F3 gave me a great foundation for this step.

“My goals for this weekend are to soak up all the information MP Motorsport provides me with and learn as much as I can.

“It won’t be easy even on a track I know well because all my competitors have so much more experience than me and I got the call so late that I didn’t have a chance to do simulator prep for F2, but in some way, this is similar to my FIA F3 debut in 2022, where I joined the series mid-season and scored points on my first attempt.

“I am a bit sad that I can’t finish my F3 season as planned, I would have loved to go out with a bang with my Campos Racing team. Huge thanks to Adrian Campos and the entire Campos squad for everything.“

Goethe returns to the MP Motorsport outfit which he raced for in 2021 and 2022 in the Spanish F4 and FRECA series respectively.

His F2 journey starts at Monza and will continue at Baku, Qatar and Abu Dhabi later this year.
