Formula 2 and Formula 3 won’t replace canned Imola round

Organisers of Formula 1’s leading junior championships have opted against replacing the cancelled Imola round on this year’s schedule.

Formula 2 and Formula 3 were due to join Formula 1 at last month’s Emilia Romagna Grand Prix before it was called off due to extensive flooding and infrastructure damage in the region.

There remained the scope for the championships to organise another event – whether as a Formula 1 support or as a standalone round – as has happened in past years, but it has been decided not to replace Imola.

It means Formula 2’s calendar will consist of 13 events, with six having taken place already, while Formula 3’s schedule reduces to nine rounds, of which four have happened.

“First, I am very sorry that we could not race to Imola this year, but obviously this was the right decision, and our thoughts are with those who have been affected,” said Formula Motorsport CEO Bruno Michel.

“Since then, we have looked at several options, but ultimately, we have decided that we will not add a new venue to this year’s calendars.

“With a total of 13 F2 rounds and nine F3 events, I believe we still have enough races to deliver two amazing and competitive seasons.”
