Haas Team Principal Ayao Komatsu has opened up on the Formula 1 future of Jack Doohan, following Rafael Camara’s 2027 promotion.
Ahead of the 2026 season, the Australian joined Haas as one of two reserve drivers, sharing the role with Ryo Hirakawa. Many suggested that this move could provide Doohan with a return to F1, following a trialing stint with Alpine.
These rumours intensified as Esteban Ocon’s future with the team grew increasingly uncertain. However, following an official announcement yesterday, it appears the 23-year-old had fallen out of favour with the Haas team. Camara will join the F1 grid in 2027, likely partnering Ollie Bearman. Leaving Doohan’s options for a full-time F1 seat up in the air.
When asked whether Doohan would remain part of the Haas family next season. Komatsu said no decision had been confirmed.
“Yeah, it’s still up in the air,” Komatsu told media, including Motosport Week.
The Japanese team boss explained that the selection process for Ocon’s replacement was extremely tough. Emphasising that all the drivers who ran the TPC test were strong.
“To be fair, the good thing of all the driver selection process was all the drivers who were involved did a very, very good job. Rafa, Leo Fornaroli, Ryo Hirakawa, Jack Doohan.
“I believe they all got the best out of themselves and every time they got in the car, they improved. So that was honestly a very, very uplifting process to be involved with.”
But whilst Doohan is facing another year on the sidelines, Komatsu highlighted it’s not the end of the road for the Australian just yet.
“So with Jack, our door’s open. Definitely, we’ve been talking with himself and then his manager as well to see if we can do something together beyond this year. So that’s still an open question.”
