Rafael Camara’s chosen race car number is taken in Formula 1, but has revealed the back-up that will adorn the cars throughout his career from now on.
The Brazilian as formally announced as an F1 driver for 2027, his signature being landed by Haas, taking the place the experienced Esteban Ocon.
Camara has backed up his stellar Formula 3 title-winning campaign with another, equally impressive showing in Formula 2 this year, and currently leads the standings with Invicta Racing.
The 21-year-old Ferrari Academy driver will be expected to partner Oliver Bearman, whose 2027 seat is not yet formally confirmed.
Camara’s chosen number is 5, but with Audi driver, fellow Invicta alumni and compatriot Gabriel Bortoleto taking that number already, it will be down to Camara to choose a second choice.
Speaking to media, including Motorsport Week, upon the announcement that he will join on a “multi-year” deal with the Banbury-based squad, revealed what that second choice will be.
“Yes, so I think we’ll be using the 50,” he said. “Obviously, the first option would be 5 but obviously, Gabi is using that. But yeah, it’s 50 because basically, my birthday is 5-5-05.
“I spoke with my dad and he said it’s 50. It makes sense with the birthday date!”
