Pierre Gasly quickly questioned why Lando Norris didn’t receive a penalty after the Formula 1 Singapore Sprint Race.
In the final lap of the Sprint Race, Norris dove down the inside of his teammate, Oscar Piastri. With no space left in the corner, the duo collided, and both drivers spun and plummeted down the order.
Norris crossed the line just within the points but was under threat of a potential penalty. However, as qualifying got underway, Norris was given no further action for the incident.
Gasly was frustrated after qualifying when questioned about the penalty, which, if applied, would’ve seen him claim a point.
“I would have scored a point if Lando had been penalised!” he joked. “You shouldn’t really crash into your teammate, but yeah, I mean, I’m not going to go down that route! I don’t know; we’ve got stewards for that, and yeah, they made up their minds: whatever the ref says, the ref is right.”
When asked whether he agreed with the FIA’s decision, he pointed to a potential discrepancy in penalty consistency.
Sometimes, with inter-team collisions, penalties aren’t applied or are avoided because the team doesn’t petition the FIA, accepting the damage and not wanting further action. However, Gasly pointed out that that hasn’t been the case in recent weekends.
“Well, I mean, Lindblad [and] Lawson in Baku… unfortunately, Franco got a really harsh one from Baku, but yeah, it’s another two collisions between teammates, and there’s no further investigation.”
Those collisions likely led to further action as other cars were involved in the incidents. But the Frenchman marked it as something to bring up in the future.”
“So, yeah, I’m sure we’ll discuss that with the stewards.”
Gasly will get another chance at pole in tomorrow’s main race. The Frenchman qualified eighth, putting him in a strong position to pick up points in the race.
