Martin Brundle has weighed in on the debate over Formula 1’s virtual safety car regulations, arguing that Lando Norris’s lost victory at the inaugural Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid exposed a genuine flaw in the rules rather than simple bad luck.
Norris looked set for a comfortable win in Madrid until a VSC was triggered moments after he had passed the pit entry.
By the time he cycled through his stop a lap later, racing conditions had resumed, denying him the free pit stop that rivals Andrea Kimi Antonelli and Max Verstappen were able to take.
A slow stop compounded the loss, dropping Norris to fifth before he recovered to finish third.
Norris called the outcome “unfair,” arguing it is “a rule that should not define a whole race.
” He was the only driver on the grid who missed out on the free stop, he said, and while VSC timing has swung for and against him plenty of times over his career, this marked the first time it had cost him a win outright rather than a handful of places.

Brundle, writing in his post-race column for Sky Sports F1, described the result as feeling “rather like a robbery,” noting that both Antonelli and Verstappen had been quick to acknowledge afterwards that the win should have been Norris’s.
On potential fixes, he considered and dismissed the idea of closing the pit lane during a VSC period, reasoning that this simply shifts the congestion and unfairness problem rather than solving it.
His preferred solution is a minimum enforced duration — keeping any VSC active for at least one full lap so every driver gets the same window to pit — while conceding that this trades away green-flag racing time that fans want to see
. He was also critical of the Madrid circuit itself, though he expects layout changes designed at improving overtaking, along with smoother logistics and clearer signage, in time for 2027.
