Carlos Sainz and his future in Formula 1 has been the subject of recent speculation – and according to reports in his home country, there is a decision that has been made.
The Spaniard has endured a nightmare season with Williams, as the Grove-based squad has struggled to adapt to the sport’s new regulations, amid a problematic and heavy chassis.
A far contrast from his 2025 season, in which he led a Williams revolution back into the midfield, finishing fifth in the Constructors’ Championship, aided by two podiums from the former Ferrari wheelsmith.
Sainz’s status as one of F1’s top drivers will have no doubt led to constant scrutiny as to whether the 31-year-old would continue with the team, as this setback will potentially hamper its trajectory gained from its 2025.
Prior to signing with Williams, Sainz was heavily linked with a switch to Sauber amid its morphing into Audi, but it is widely considered that he ultimately turned down the opportunity.
Some media reports recently have linked him back to the German marque, which would see him essentially make a total U-turn, and disrupt the current line-up of Nico Hulkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto.
There has also been some chatter that a potential move back into the Red Bull family could be on offer, should Max Verstappen decide to quit the team, amid reports of talks the Dutchman has held with McLaren.
However, Spanish publication Marca has reported that Sainz is set to sign a one-year contract extension with Williams.
Despite the FW48’s troubles, there are positives for the team to look forward to. Not just upgrades in the remaining races, but the continuation as a Mercedes customer could offer some stability under the current circumstances.
As F1 silly season continues, Sainz’s arc in that particular story could prove pivotal to how the remainder of the grid shapes up.
