Valtteri Bottas has revealed he has qualified for the UCI Gravel World Championship following Formula 1‘s summer shutdown after the Hungarian Grand Prix.

F1’s mandatory summer shutdown sees drivers take to social media to promote a variety of activities to keep themselves occupied away from racing.

Some, like Kimi Antonelli have spent their time on boats in different parts of the world, but Bottas had a different idea.

The Finn, a keen cyclist, took part in the Gravel World Series and qualified fifth in his age group in the Czech Republic.

This was not a solo effort, as his partner, Olympic cyclist Tiffany Cromwell joined him in the venture, Bottas taking to Instagram to share the results of his exploits.

“Whilst the others are relaxing on their boats. 131km UCI Gravel World Series @ Hlinsko. Finished 5th in Men 35-39, and qualified for the gravel world champs. Thank you for the huge support on the tough course yesterday. Loved it! Always nice to explore events like this together with Tiffany Cromwell,” he wrote.

A break from the norm for Valtteri Bottas

Bottas and Cadillac’s season has been one of trials and tribulations, as he attempts to aid the team in navigating the challenges of a maiden F1 season.

He retired during the Hungarian GP, but remained defiant on what the team can achieve in the second half of the season.

“DNF is not the best way to start the summer break, but again one to learn from,” he posted after the race at the Hungaroring. “We’ve come a long way as a team in such a short time, and I’m proud of everyone’s hard work. These defeats will just make us stronger for the future.”

Bottas’ achievements are a marked departure from other drivers’ aims during the summer break. What impact this will have on his performance when the season resumes remains unclear.
