Colton Herta will replace Sergio Perez in FP1 at this weekend’s Formula 1 Sao Paulo Grand Prix as he attempts to qualify for an FIA super licence.
Herta took part in FP1 last weekend in Mexico City, emerging as a surprise contender to replace Valtteri Bottas at the team in 2027.
The purpose of his outing was to get him over the line for an FIA super licence, completing 100km, to claim the 40th point on his FIA license, to qualify him for an F1 seat.
But an error with IndyCar’s results classifications left him one point short after Mexico City, with another outing needed to get him over the line.
Cadillac has now confirmed Herta will take part in FP1, replacing Perez, who recently signed a contract extension.
In a statement Herta said: “I’m really looking forward to getting back behind the wheel of the MAC-26 for another FP1 session.
“Interlagos is such an iconic, historic track, and driving an F1 car around there is going to be an awesome experience.
“Every time I’ve stepped into the car this year, from Barcelona to Budapest, COTA and Mexico City, I’ve felt more comfortable and better integrated with the engineering team.
“My goal for Friday morning in Brazil is the same: execute the run plan cleanly, give Checo and the engineers the best possible setup data to start their weekend, and keep building on my progress in the car. I’m grateful to the team for giving me this opportunity.”

Cadillac Team Principal praises Colton Herta
Cadillac F1 team principal Marcin Budkowski praised Herta, highlighting his growth.
“I’m also pleased to see Colton return to the MAC-26 for another FP1 outing, stepping in for Checo.
“His growth in the car across his sessions has been impressive, and his feedback remains invaluable to our 2027 development program.”
Cadillac’s immediate action to give a second outing in a week to Herta underlines how seriously the team is evaluating him as an option for 2027.
All eyes will be on the American to see how he performs in Sao Paulo.
