Max Verstappen said he was “proud” of his Verstappen Racing drivers after maiden GT World Challenge win at former Formula 1 French Grand Prix circuit, Magny-Cours.

After many close calls and heartbreaks, the Dutchman’s GT outfit, Verstappen Racing, registered its maiden win at the French circuit.

The duo of Daniel Juncadella and Jules Gounon displayed a commanding performance at Magny-Cours, winning the 60-minute sprint race from pole position.

That said, it wasn’t an easy lights to flag for the pair. A late-race full course yellow allowed Arthur Leclerc to mount an onslaught but a solid opening stint by Gounon meant Juncadella was able to bag the team’s first win.

After the event, Verstappen expressed his pride on social media. “So proud. Well done everyone,” he said.

His father, and former F1 driver Jos also congratulated the team. “Well done guys,” he added.

Juncadella credited the Verstappen Racing crew for executing the perfect race, allowing the duo to finally get the team’s maiden honors.

“It’s never easy. Sprint racing is hectic. You need to be spot on with everything,” he said.

“Obviously, 80 per cent of the job was done by my teammate with an amazing quali, an amazing first stint.

“He pulled a very comfortable gap that just made things easier – we could chill a bit more at the pit stop.

“I had a comfortable gap after the stop so I could just manage a bit. Amazing to get the first proper win.”

Gounon said that the win was a “very special” milestone for him, and the entire team, especially in the context of Verstappen Racing’s painful loss at the Nurburgring, in May.
