Aston Martin’s Chief Trackside Officer Mike Krack has dropped a big hint that Team Principal Adrian Newey will be present at this weekend’s Monaco Grand Prix, ending a three-month Formula 1 hiatus from trackside duties.
The legendary design guru has not been seen since the season-opener in Australia, where he revealed the extent of the team’s problems, relating to its Honda power unit.
In Melbourne, the 67-year-old explained how both Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll were at risk of “permanent nerve damage”, before taking charge on the pit wall, as part of his new role heading up the Silverstone-based squad.
Newey was absent at the next round in China, and subsequently has not been seen since, with later, and still unconfirmed media reports, that he was in hospital with an undisclosed illness.
But ahead of this weekend’s race at the famous principality street circuit, Krack hinted in big terms that the legendary designer will be present from Friday.
“You will see. I think we’ll see him this weekend, so it’s good. It’s good because he has a lot of experience also here,” he told media, including Motorsport Week.
“Many race wins here, so I think there is certainly one or the other advice that we can get that would bring us forward, so we’re looking forward to that.”
Last year, Monaco was the first race in which Newey was seen in the team’s British Racing Green colours, having joined in the March after a period of gardening upon exiting Red Bull.
Newey’s apparent presence will sure be a galvanising one, as the team looks to continue its steady progress alongside Honda from its pre and early season woes.
