Williams has added former Mercedes R&D Chief Dan Milner to its ranks in a bid to strengthen its “ambitious” Formula 1 project’s core technology processes.
The last couple of seasons has seen the Grove-based team make concerted efforts to elevate its “perennial backmarkers” status – an unfortunate reality it has faced in the last decade or so.
James Vowles’ arrival from Mercedes coincided with major steps forward in the team’s Dorilton Capital era. Last season, Williams finished fifth overall in the Constructors’ standings.
That said, success as a pattern isn’t instilled yet within its ranks – facing setbacks owing to deep-rooted inefficiencies in the iconic British team’s internal facilities and processes.
To make that leap forward, however, Williams has been making moves off the track – Milner’s arrival from the Brackley-based team being one of the most recent and augmented statement of intent.
Milner, who had taken the reigns of the squad through its Honda era, the one-season Brawn GP wonder, and then as a works Mercedes outfit, will head up Williams’ vehicle technology department.
Speaking of his motivations to join Williams, Milner highlighted the “ambitious” plans and the work already undertaken under Vowles’ leadership.
“Williams has a clear, ambitious plan to move forward,” he said.

Williams targets “consistent” gains over blips in F1
The team has shown sparks of brilliance in the past, but 2026 has posed a unique challenge of integration and reliability.
The FW48 is clearly suffering from weight issues as well as reliability – a scenario Williams wants to tackle with more autonomy in terms of essential components such as hydraulics and transmission.
Currently, the team buys these components off the shelf in line with its customer arrangement with Mercedes.
Milner, according to Williams’ Technical Director Matt Harman, will be key to this moving forward.
“Dan has led major programmes across R&D and powertrains, turning ideas into performance, and he knows how to bring teams together to deliver,” Harman explained.
“He will be central to our vehicle technology plan and to converting innovation into consistent performance gains on track.”
Three rounds into the 2026 campaign Williams sits in ninth with only two points to its name.
