IndyCar has announced that Mike O’Gara has joined the series as Vice President of Competition.
The veteran engineer has overseen a long list of duties over the past 30 years, most recently contributing to Chip Ganassi Racing’s program during a string of championship efforts by Scott Dixon and Alex Palou.
He served in an executive leadership role during that time and also helped establish CGR’s Cadillac endurance racing program, which fielded successful prototype sports cars from 2014 through 2024.
O’Gara’s new role will see him serve as the senior technical authority, leading all aspects of performance strategy, race engineering, and technical governance for both IndyCar and IndyNXT.
He will oversee technical rules changes while ensuring that there is a fail playing field among all the competitors.
He will also develop a long-term technical progression for the series, including ensuring that goals are met regarding the upcoming chassis introduction for the 2028 season.
“I am thrilled to take this next step in my career and honored to join IndyCar in this critical role for the series,” O’Gara said.
“This is truly an exciting time for the sport with a new car on the horizon and the opportunity to build on a growing focus and interest in IndyNXT.
“I know my prior experience has set me up to successfully contribute and help mold the future of North America’s premier open-wheel racing series. I cannot wait to get started.”
The experience O’Gara bring to the position will help him interface with the paddock, including teams, manufacturers, and suppliers, to ensure that the series functions properly from a technical point of view.
He also will be one of the top voices to develop and implement future safety advancements for IndyCar.
