McLaren has announced that it will once again run its “fan-favourite” Chrome livery on its Formula 1 cars at this weekend’s United States Grand Prix.

The Woking squad previously used the livery at last year’s British Grand Prix, and is a nod to its longstanding colour scheme which ran on its cars between 2006 and 2014, with CEO Zak Brown commenting at the time: “It’s no secret that racing fans absolutely love McLaren’s classic chrome livery.”

McLaren had previously ran a similar silver colour scheme between 1997 and 2005, in conjunction with tobacco brand West.

The livery is designed also as part of its Chrome Shines Again campaign, alongside its Official Primary Partner, Google.

McLaren says that the livery embraces “a modern twist to represent the team’s enduring legacy, with the enhanced chrome representing the two brands’ pursuit of innovative design.”

“Touches” of chrome will also feature on the race suits worn by its drivers, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.

It is the fourth special livery the team has used in 2024, with special one-offs used for Japan [designed by Japanese artist MILTZ], Singapore [which referenced McLaren’s much-loved Marlboro livery of the 1970s, 80s and 90s] and, in Monaco, which used the colours of the helmet worn by one of its most notable drivers, Ayrton Senna.

As the teams head to Austin for this weekend’s race, McLaren leads the Constructors’ Championship by 41 points over Red Bull, with Norris second in the Drivers’ standings, 52 points adrift of title-leader Max Verstappen.

Piastri is fourth with 237 points, only eight behind Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.
