McLaren has revealed a special one-off livery celebrating its Formula 1 heritage that will be used at this weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix.

In collaboration with unchain technology company OKX, the Woking squad has designed a colour scheme dubbed “Legend Reborn”, which celebrates the era of the MP4 cars, the prefix used for McLarens produced between 1981 and 1996, when the team were primarily sponsored by Marlboro cigarettes.

The red-and-white design that the team used for that period has gone down as one of the most recognisable and celebrated in the history of F1.

In a statement released by McLaren, the team says that the livery “combines the MP4 era with McLaren’s iconic papaya asa way of honouring the heritage of the team,” adding that it “honours the McLaren legends – including the likes of Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost and Niki Lauda – that drove and helped create the iconic history of the MP4, with the names of 13 iconic drivers from the era integrated into the livery on the cockpit.”

Louise McEwen, the Chief Marketing Officer of McLaren Racing, said: “It is fantastic to bring back our third bespoke livery in Singapore with OKX. Legend Reborn is a great way to celebrate and honour our iconic history, in a way that unites fans old and new.

“Following on from this year’s Senna campaign, this livery further embodies our partnership with OKX as we continue to deliver unique story telling campaigns for McLaren fans and OKX customers globally.”

It is not the first special livery that McLaren have produced this season, with the ‘McLaren SENNA presented by OKX’ design being produced for the Monaco Grand Prix, which used the colours of Senna’s famous helmet to celebrate the legendary Brazilian’s life and career.

Mercedes and RB are two other teams that have opted for special liveries this weekend, with the German marque using a green colour scheme to celebrate its longstanding partnership with Petronas, and the Milton Keynes team releasing a denim-themed design in conjunction with sponsor Hugo.
