Lando Norris went quickest in the final session of Sprint Qualifying with rain coming for the final eight-minute session.
The McLaren driver beat Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton by 1.261s at the Shanghai circuit with Fernando Alonso in third, 1.975s back.
Red Bull’s Max Verstappen was fourth, ahead of fifth-placed Carlos Sainz for Ferrari.
Sixth went to Sergio Perez in the second Red Bull with Charles Leclerc the second-best Ferrari in seventh.
McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and the Sauber duo of Valtteri Bottas and home hero Zhou Guanyu rounded out the top-10.
