NTT IndyCar Series driver David Malukas suffered a fractured hand in a mountain biking accident over the weekend, and the timeline for his recovery is not yet known.
The 22-year-old is set to make his Arrow McLaren debut this season, beginning with the opening round on the streets of St. Petersburg on March 10.
After spending two years racing for Dale Coyne Racing with HMD Motorsports, the young driver is looking to show his full potential at the larger organization.
Team representatives confirmed Malukas is scheduled to have surgery on his hand late in the day on Tuesday, and his recovery timeline will be determined after that point.
The good news for Malukas is that multiple drivers have suffered hand fractures in recent years and they have typically been able to return to racing soon after.
Callum Ilott injured his hand during a crash in the 2022 Indianapolis 500, and he was only forced to sit out for a single race weekend before returning to the cockpit.
Similarly, Jimmie Johnson fractured his hand in Long Beach during his time driving in IndyCar, and he was able to continue racing without missing an event with the help of a custom-made carbon fiber splint affixed to his hand.
With St. Petersburg being over three weeks away, there is a good chance Malukas will be able to compete with little or no restrictions on the bumpy street course.
Every injury is unique, however, and the full plan for his recovery is still yet to be determined.
