Max Verstappen bested team-mate Sergio Perez to pole position at the Bahrain International Circuit, with just over one-tenth separating the duo.
Charles Leclerc was third for Ferrari but was unable to be on the circuit late on for one last run.
His stable partner Carlos Sainz was fourth to create an all-Ferrari second row.
Fernando Alonso out-qualified both Mercedes drivers in fifth place, with George Russell and Lewis Hamilton following in sixth and seventh.
