Alonso suffers fractured jaw, expected to be fit for Bahrain

Fernando Alonso has suffered a fractured jaw following a cycling accident on Thursday but his Alpine team expects him to be ready in time for the start of the 2021 Formula 1 season.

Alonso was hospitalised in Switzerland in the wake of suffering an accident while out cycling.

Alonso was kept under observation and a fracture was located in his upper jaw.

A successful corrective operation was carried out and the attending medical team are satisfied with his progress.

He is expected to remain in hospital until Sunday.

Alpine says Alonso “will be able to progressively resume training” following a few days of complete rest.

In a statement it emphasised that “we expect him to be fully operational to undertake preparation for the season.”

Further updates will be issued when appropriate.

The police report, published by the canton of Ticino, revealed further details of how the accident happened.

It stated that Alonso was cycling through the Viganello district of Lugano when he was struck by a car, driven by a 42-year-old, approaching from the opposite direction, as it turned across him into a supermarket parking lot.

Alpine has not yet set a launch date for its 2021 Formula 1 car, the A521, which was fired up for the first time at Enstone on Wednesday.

Pre-season testing is due to run from March 12-14 at the Bahrain International Circuit, which will subsequently host the opening race on March 28.
