Alfa Romeo’s Antonio Giovinazzi believes his performance in race trim was where he made the biggest year-on-year gains through the 2020 Formula 1 season.
Ferrari-affiliated Giovinazzi stepped up to Formula 1 with Alfa Romeo full-time in 2019, partnering Kimi Raikkonen, and continued at the squad into 2020.
Alfa Romeo struggled for overall speed through much of 2020, placing eighth in the standings, with their eight points split equally between Giovinazzi and Raikkonen.
“For sure I would say I improved quite a lot,” said Giovinazzi, reflecting on his 2020 campaign.
“I felt more comfortable with the car, with the team and everything [else], and this is something that ever young driver says – you feel always in the first season a little bit more nervous as everything is quite new.
“I think [I improved on] many points, I would say mostly on the race, as it was one of my negative points [in 2019]. Lap one where I was not great, this year [2020] it was quite good.
“Also on the race pace, I think I did quite a good progress. It helped to watch what Kimi was doing as I think he is one of the best there. Happy with the progress but still a lot of work to do.”
Giovinazzi and Raikkonen will continue to form Alfa Romeo’s driver line-up this year.
