Luca Ghiotto storms to victory in Abu Dhabi season finale
UNI-Virtuosi's Luca Ghiotto stormed his way from third on the grid to claim victory in the season-ending FIA Formula 2 Abu Dhabi Sprint Race.
Ghiotto made a superb getaway from the grid to get by the DAMS of Nicholas Latifi and get into second place behind polesitter Giuliano Alesi.
The Italian slowly closed the gap to Alesi as the race unfolded, eventually passing the Frenchman on lap eight out of 22.
Once Ghiotto had got by the Trident driver, he was able to clear off into the distance and sign off his Formula 2 career with his fourth win of the 2019 season.
Formula 1-bound Latifi was unable to match the pace of Ghiotto out front but managed to bring his car home in second place and prevent the Italian from snatching the runner up spot in the drivers' standings by just seven points.
DAMS team-mate Sergio Sette Camara finished third to claim a second podium finish at the Yas Marina Circuit after his Feature Race win on Saturday. Having started from eighth place, the Brazilian calmly carved his way through the field.
Callum Ilott ran inside the top three for the majority of the race, however, the Sauber Junior Team by Charouz driver lost out to Camara on the penultimate lap, dropping the British driver to fourth place.
Giuliano Alesi was often able to convert a reverse grid pole position during his time in GP3, however, the Frenchman fell back after leading the opening laps, crossing the line fifth in his Trident.
The Carlin pair of Louis Deletraz and Nobuharu Matsushita spent the race battling with each other with the Swiss driver eventually coming out on top - passing his team-mate in the closing laps - claiming sixth and seventh places respectively.
Campos Racing's Jack Aitken finished in eighth after getting by Mick Schumacher on the final lap of the race for the final points-paying position.
Schumacher and Guan Yu Zhou rounded out the top 10.
Formula 2 will return to racing action in support of the Formula 1 Bahrain Grand Prix in 2020.
