MotoGP confirms 22 rounds for 2022 season

MotoGP has confirmed that it will host 22 races from 2022 onwards in a short video, with the first of these new events being announced shortly.

It has long been rumoured that the MotoGP calendar would expand well north of 20 races, with ’20 seeing the addition of a round held in Finland at the newly-completed Kymiring bumping the tally up to 20.

A return to Portugal for the first time since 2012 also looks likely-although at the Algarve International Circuit as opposed to Estoril that has hosted the event in the past-, with two of the four races held in Spain potentially thought to be on the chopping block as MotoGP organising body Dorna looks to shake up the schedule.

Portimao has been a staple of the World Superbike calendar since 2008, with the venue making little secret of the fact it would love to have the premier class of motorcycle racing competing there.

The inclusion of more races will likely be an unpopular one for teams and riders, particularly with the layoff time generally much longer for rider than for drivers who compete in cars.
