Matevos Isaakyan to complete Formula 2 season with Sauber Junior Team
Matevos Isaakyan will race for Sauber Junior Team by Charouz for the remaining rounds of the 2019 Formula 2 championship.
Isaakyan, 21, will link up with Ferrari Driver Academy member Callum Ilott at the squad, in place of Juan Manuel Correa.
Correa sustained serious injuries in the high-speed accident at Spa-Francorchamps that claimed the life of Anthoine Hubert.
The team did not field a replacement driver at the subsequent round at Monza, but Isaakyan will now make his debut in the series at Sochi, and also race at Yas Marina.
“I'm excited to drive in the F2 championship, especially in my home grand prix,” said Isaakyan, who most recently competed in the World Endurance Championship.
“This is quite an unexpected development in my season but I'm very thankful for this opportunity and happy to join the team. It won't be an easy job as I'll be jumping straight in the car for Sochi practice.
“The biggest thing will be understanding the tyres – that will be the main focus for me as it was when I did GP3. But I don't think it will be an impossible task to try and get into the top 10 and score some points."
Isaakyan’s highest classification in major junior single-seater action came in 2017 when he finished runner-up to current Haas reserve driver Pietro Fittipaldi in the final year of Formula V8 3.5.
