Rast dominates at Lausitzring to take victory in DTM's 500th race

Rene Rast has won the 500th DTM race at the Lausitzring, finishing ahead of title rival Nico Müller. Mike Rockenfeller finished third.

Jamie Green started from pole, with Müller and Rast starting together on the second row. Rast then had a tremendous start to pass Jonathan Aberdein and move into second before making quick work of team-mate Green to take the lead of the race.

Müller, meanwhile, had a nightmare start as he was slow off the line in his Audi RS5 DTM, dropping from third to tenth. Müller, backed into a corner, then pitted early on lap 8 to try and close the gap in an undercut strategy.

The strategy mostly paid off, as the Swiss driver ended the pit stop cycle in second position, but was not able to mount a challenge to Rast, who pulled away for a dominant victory to extend his championship lead to 20 points.

Behind the two rivals, Mike Rockenfeller took his second podium of the weekend, finishing in third place ahead of Green, who mounted a late charge to climb his way back up to fourth place ahead of Robin Frijns, completing a dominant Audi top five-lockout.

Marco Wittmann was the only driver that came close to mount a challenge to the Ingolstadt horde, finishing sixth ahead of Aberdein, who fought hard for the sixth position on lap 26, with the two-time champion eventually besting the South African rookie. The top ten was completed by Loic Duval, Pietro Fittipaldi and Philipp Eng.

R-Motorsport had a difficult and forgettable Sunday, with three out of four cars retiring. Jake Dennis was first to go after two laps, with Ferdinand von Habsburg following suits on lap 9. The pair was joined by Paul di Resta on lap 21 after the Briton was forced off track by Bruno Spengler.
