Cameron leads Penske lockout in delayed Road America qualifying
Dane Cameron will be starting from pole position for the IMSA Road Race Showcase at Road America, setting a time of 01:48:715 and beating out his team-mate Helio Castroneves.
Castroneves put in a late charge that resulted in a 01:48:731, which was enough to claim a front row lockout for Acura Team Penske. The qualifying session in Wisconsin was halted due to adverse weather, but eventually got back underway with a delay of roughly half an hour.
Oliver Jarvis was third for Mazda Team Joest, beating out team-mate Harry Tincknell by under half a second to create an all-Mazda second row ahead of the fastest Cadillac of Simon Trummer in the #84 JDC-Miller Motorsports entry.
Pipo Derani was sixth in #31 Whelen Engineering car, ahead of Joao Barbosa, Wayne Taylor Racing's Renger van der Zande and the second JDC-Miller Cadillac of Misha Goikhberg. Jon Bennett brought up the rear in the #53 CORE Autosport Nissan.
In LMP2, Matt McMurry looked set for a class pole when he spun his #52 PR1 Mathiasen Motorsports ORECA and bringing out a red flag, deleting his two previous laps. This included the quickest time he'd set the lap before, dropping him behind James French and the #38 Performance Tech Motorsports ORECA.
Tom Blomqvist set a 02:00:344 to claim pole position in GTLM in the #25 BMW M8 GTE. Ryan Briscoe initially took second place, but had his fastest lap deleted due to a track limit infraction at turn one. As a result, Oliver Gavin was promoted back to second in the #4 Corvette, still a good three-tenths off Blomqvist.
The #24 BMW in the hands of Jesse Krohn took third, with Briscoe fourth in the #67 after his fast lap was deleted. The #66 Ford was fifth, while Porsche disappointingly only took sixth and eight for Laurens Vanthoor and Patrick Pilet respectively. Jan Magnussen split the pair in the #3 Corvette.
In GTD, Riley Motorsports continued their weekend form as Ben Keating took pole in the #33 Mercedes-AMG GT3 ahead of Corey Lewis in the #48 Paul Miller Racing Lamborghini Huracan GT3 Evo while Compass Racing continued to impress with a third place for Matt Plumb in the #76 McLaren 720S GT3.
