Pierre Gasly plays down speculation over Red Bull F1 future
Pierre Gasly has played down speculation over his future with Red Bull, stressing that his sole focus is to turn around his current predicament.
Gasly has struggled for consistency and overall performance since making the step up from Toro Rosso for the 2019 season.
Gasly has yet to finish a race higher than fifth with the nadir coming at his home grand prix in France last week, in which he was significantly behind team-mate Max Verstappen.
It has led to speculation that Red Bull is reviewing Gasly’s position long-term, but the Frenchman stressed he is focused on improving his situation.
“I think at the moment no one is happy and I’m the first one not happy at the performance,” he said.
“I’m a racing driver, I feel we are far from the potential we have and that’s not pleasant and no one is happy.
“At the moment the focus is just on putting everything together, and it’s the same on my side, there are things I can do better as well but we are clearly not showing the potential.
“I think that’s the main thing to focus on at the moment.”
Gasly suspected that set-up changes between FP3 and qualifying hurt his prospects in France, and since then Red Bull has undergone an extensive assessment of his RB15.
“I’m not going to go into details on everything but we are all developing to extract our full potential this weekend,” he said. “That’s what we are going to do.
“At the moment it’s a bit inconsistent, some sessions we are fast, others not.
“So it’s just finding the consistency and consistent base and that’s the main thing.
“Sometimes we are fast but we need to be as consistent as the other car.
“It’s for different reasons. It’s really important to find what works and build from that base. But at the moment we are struggling to find it.”
