Kevin Magnussen quickest as F1 testing continues in Spain

Haas’ Kevin Magnussen led the way during Wednesday morning’s Formula 1 test action at the Spanish Grand Prix.

Magnussen set a time of 1:18.101 – substantially slower than Valtteri Bottas’ Tuesday benchmark – to head the leaderboard, just 0.081s clear of Ferrari simulator driver Antonio Fuoco.

Fuoco took the reins of the Ferrari-run SF90 for his first test since 2016 while regular racer Charles Leclerc switched to the Pirelli-run car that Sebastian Vettel drove on Tuesday.

Leclerc placed fifth, Toro Rosso's Alexander Albon and Alfa Romeo's Kimi Raikkonen, driving a repaired C38 in the wake of Callum Ilott’s hefty crash on Tuesday afternoon.

Williams reserve Nicholas Latifi placed sixth, causing one of three red flags when his FW42 halted at pit exit.

The biggest drama of the morning befell Formula 2 racer Nikita Mazepin, who spun Mercedes’ W10 into the gravel at Turn 12 with a few minutes of the session remaining.

Mazepin, whose 2019 programme includes 12 days of running in Mercedes’ 2017-spec car, took seventh, and still amassed the most mileage, completing 82 laps.

Renault tester Jack Aitken was eighth while McLaren simulator driver Oliver Turvey took ninth; the Briton will hand over to reserve Sergio Sette Camara for the afternoon session.

Red Bull’s Daniel Ticktum came to a halt at Turn 10, causing the other red flag, while Racing Point duo Lance Stroll (driving on behalf of Pirelli) and simulator driver Nick Yelloly capped the 12-driver field.

The afternoon session will begin at 14:00 local time
