Pirelli confirms tyre selections for US Grand Prix
Pirelli has confirmed the compound choices made by drivers for next weekend’s United States Grand Prix.
Pirelli has nominated the three softest compounds from its range – the Ultrasoft, Supersoft and Soft – with drivers, as usual, having free choice for 10 of their 13 sets.
Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull drivers will all have seven sets of the Ultrasoft compound available, with only minor variance in the number of Supersoft and Softs chosen by each driver.
Williams and McLaren have taken the most aggressive stance, selecting nine sets of Ultrasofts, with the remaining teams opting for either seven or eight sets of the purple-banded compound.
Pirelli is set to take a more aggressive stance next season, with the likely introduction of a softer, sixth compound, after adopting a conservative approach for 2017, due to the new regulations.
The bulk of this year’s races have been won using a one-stop strategy, with the hardest of the three compounds selected for each event used only sparingly, often just for the early stages of the opening practice session.
