Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz will have equal status heading into 2023, new boss Frederic Vasseur has affirmed.
Vasseur has taken up the role of Ferrari’s Formula 1 Team Principal, in place of Mattia Binotto, following previous spells at Renault and Sauber/Alfa Romeo.
Leclerc finished a distant second in last year’s championship while Sainz was fifth.
Both are contracted through the end of the 2024 season.
“I think it is the same everywhere [in that] we have two very good drivers that they are able to do the job,” said Vasseur.
“We will have the capacity to provide them exactly the same car, the same structure, the same support.
“What is clear the target is to win with Ferrari, and for Ferrari, there will be no number one and number two, but if at one stage we have to take action I will take action – doesn’t matter if it is for one or the other, but if at one stage of the season I have to do something I will do it.”
Ferrari finished second to Red Bull Racing in 2022 and Vasseur emphasised that the squad has to target overhauling its opponent in 2023.
“It is an obvious target: when you are in a top team, you can’t have another target other than to win,” he said.
“You can’t start the season saying you’re happy with P2, it would be a lack of ambition. We have everything to do a good job and the target will be to win, for sure.”
Ferrari’s 2023 car will be unveiled on February 14.
