How much each F1 driver has to pay to enter the 2023 season

Suspense for the 2023 Formula 1 season is starting to rise, as Max Verstappen enters the year looking to secure a third successive championship – however the Dutchman must fork out the most money for his Super Licence.

Verstappen’s successful campaign, which saw him win 15 out of 23 grands prix en route to his second title, saw him score 454 points – a new record for a single season.

However, this in turn means that he owes the most to enter the following campaign.

The FIA Super Licence rules stipulate that a driver must pay a base figure of €10,400 as well as €2,100 for every point scored in the previous season.

Verstappen scored a mammoth 454 points last year – meaning the 24-year-old must pay an eye-watering €963,800 for the 2023 campaign.

Only three drivers pay the minimum fee of €10,400 – rookies Oscar Piastri and Logan Sargeant, as well as Nico Hulkenberg who returns to a full-time role after two seasons as a reserve driver.

Hulkenberg raced at the opening two rounds for Aston Martin last year, but didn’t score points at the events in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.

Despite only racing in one event, Nyck de Vries has extra to pay as he scored two points on his race debut for Williams in Italy.
