Verstappen now shares imposing F1 record with Schumacher and Vettel

With his 13th race victory of the 2022 season at the US Grand Prix on Sunday, Max Verstappen further embedded himself into Formula 1’s history books.

The result now ties him for the record for most wins in a single campaign.

Previously, the record was held by Michael Schumacher, who notched 13 wins during his dominant 2004 campaign with Ferrari, which was his final year to win a championship.

Sebastian Vettel then achieved 13 wins in 2013 with Red Bull, which was also his final title-winning campaign in the sport.

Verstappen has now matched that tally with Red Bull, having already picked up his second F1 championship last time out in Japan.

With three races remaining in the 2022 season, Verstappen has a chance to claim the record as his own.

Verstappen’s victory in the USA came after a battle against 2021 title rival Lewis Hamilton, with Verstappen passing the Mercedes driver late on in the grand prix.

“This is a great track for battling, if you pass in one corner, you can come back in the next,” he said. “It’s really enjoyable to drive here.”

With the victory, Red Bull also picked up its fifth Constructors’ Championship on the weekend that team owner Dietrich Mateschitz passed away.

“We had a big chance to win the Constructors’ title here, and of course you want to do that in style. I think we did that today.

“This one is definitely dedicated to Dietrich. What he has done for everyone… the only thing we could do today was win – and even though after the pit stop it was not looking great, I gave it everything and pushed to the limit to come back.”
