McLaren confirms Ricciardo’s return for Bahrain GP

McLaren has confirmed that Daniel Ricciardo will be available to race for the team in Bahrain this weekend after testing positive for Covid-19 last week.

Ricciardo missed the first two days of pre-season testing in Sakhir due to feeling unwell, before he tested positive prior to the final day of running.

The Australian was placed in isolation, but McLaren has now confirmed that Ricciardo has tested negative multiple times.

As a result, he will be back in the car this weekend for the team alongside Lando Norris.

A statement from the team read: “McLaren F1 Team confirms that after testing positive for Covid-19 last week, Daniel has now returned a number of negative tests and will therefore return to the paddock on Thursday ready to compete in this weekend’s Bahrain GP.

“Daniel has been feeling better each day as he continued to recover while in isolation following local regulations in Bahrain.”

Should Ricciardo have missed the race, McLaren had a number of options to replace the former Red Bull and Renault driver.

It has Mercedes reserves Stoffel Vandoorne and Nyck de Dries in its pool, as well as Alpine reserve and 2021 Formula 2 Champion Oscar Piastri.
