Mercedes boss Toto Wolff believes Lewis Hamilton triggered his “superhero powers” in the wake of his exclusion from qualifying in Brazil.

Hamilton surged from last to fifth in Sprint and then rose from 10th to take victory at Interlagos, before going on to claim a dominant win upon Formula 1’s first visit to Losail on Sunday.

It enabled Hamilton to move to within eight points of title leader Max Verstappen.

“I think when adversity happens it takes him to a place where he is able to mobilise superhero powers,” said Wolff. “It was the adversity that triggered that at Interlagos.

“I think I never stopped believing that this was on, because we had such a strong Turkey that obviously fell back below our expectations in Austin and in Mexico.

“Anyone in the team refuses to give up. I’m grateful how the championship has swung.

“If you had told me at the start of the year that we’d be right in the fight in Saudi and Abu Dhabi I would have taken it.

“I hope that’s going to go all the way to the end and whoever will win merits the win.”

Wolff nonetheless cautioned that Mercedes cannot get carried away after back-to-back victories.

“We know there are still many challenges to come but we’re enjoying the ride, when it is so tough, this is exactly why we are in this sport,” he said.

“It’s maximum attack for the last two rounds, we’ve got some points to make up, so this is what we’re aiming to do and we’re enjoying every minute of it.”
